Garsworld "The Spirit of Michigan. It is based upon a deathless loyalty to Michigan and all her ways; an enthusiasm that makes it second nature for Michigan men to spread the gospel of their university to the world’s distant outposts; a conviction that nowhere is there a better university, in any way, than this Michigan of ours.” — Fielding Yost Follow @garsworld Happy New Year.... Great end to the fall athletic season which is rolling into the meat of the winter season. The football Wolverines played a dominant New Years Bowl Game by thumping Florida and giving my blood pressure a rest. It all came together as both sides of the ball played their best game of the season. Social media is already abuzz with way too early predictions for the 2016 season. But it looks like we will have one of the top recruiting classes this off-season which will only pour fuel on the fire. As to the winter sports, the hockey team is on a roll just having thumped sparty for a weekend sweep. The basketball team is again working thru some injuries but is in better position than they were this time last season. Lets keep the good times rolling! Go Blue!! Good Week.... Soon to turn into a great week. The Wolverine basketball and hockey teams hit the road yesterday and came away with needed wins. The hockey team ticked off one of their season goals by winning the GLI down at the Joe using defense no less to win back to back games. The basketball team opened B1G play by beating Illinois on the road. Now we just need to cap it off with a football win on New Years Day. Go Blue!! But Still.... It was a really crappy way to end the season but still if you would have told me we would go 9 and 3 during the regular season, we all would have been excited. The buckeyes studied film and took advantage of the shortcomings of our Wolverines on both sides of the ball. The defensive line, a position of depth starting the season, was down to a true first string only. But still, we all felt the previous coaching regimes had left us in a deep hole, certainly from the standpoint of the current coaching strategies. This will start to change with the successes of the current season. So now we sit back and see how the championships play out to find out which bowl game we get invited to. Keep in mind, it has been a couple of years since we played after November. But still, it would have been nice to grab that last game against our biggest rival. Down To One.... Urban decided he didn't want to win their game last weekend but our Wolverines are going to do every thing they can to win this next one. I hate this game on a holiday weekend but I'll have the food ready and the site rockin'. Come on out (early) and enjoy this last tailgate of the regular season. Go Blue! FucktheBucks!! Unbelievable.... While I am enjoying the winning ways, the ends to these ball games is resulting in a lot more gray hairs and stomach churning. Winning on the road in the B1G is never easy although the Indiana crowd really wasn't a factor with their mostly empty student section (see the photos). But it took a last second comeback and a couple of overtimes to finally pull this one out. The passing game has vastly improved as the season has progressed but the defense seems to be a bit worn down. Both sides of the ball will get a test this coming trip to Happy Valley. PSU has one of the top ranked defenses and a senior QB. But win this game and the last home game is for all the marbles. I want it!! Stress Free.... Needed an easy win after the last couple of weeks. The offense showed some great things although I would have liked to have seen more consistency in the second half. Would really like to see the defense get back to their domination of the early part of the season although this last game wasn't bad. Just laying some concern as we head into the stretch facing the top three quarterbacks of the B1G, two of those games on the road. Don't dismiss the Hoosiers as an easy win. Although their defense is one of the worst, their offense can move the ball and gets points. But wouldn't it be great to get back to the point where the last game against the buckeyes meant everything. It has been too long. Enough Heart Stopping.... Taking these games down to the last play has got to stop for a few weeks. Lets get back to methodical offense and a shutdown defense so I can enjoy the end of the game. My biggest concern coming out of the game with the Gophers is number of big plays our defense has given up against the last two opponents. Minnesota's offense is considered one of the worst in the country and they put up a lot of yards and points. But we got the Jug back and are now home to one of the newcomers to the B1G. Time for another tailgate and the time off for me got me ready. Another ridiculous late kickoff in November will leave us plenty dark and cold after the game so lets hope the commercials are kept to a minimum. Get The Jug Back.... Game week again as the Wolverines travel to Minny to win the Brown Jug back. The sounds coming out the Michigan locker room seem like a good sign that the boys are ready to take their game to the Gophers and put The Fluke behind them. Night games on the road have not been good to us in recent history so we will need to bring our best game. The defense is quite capable of shutting down the Gopher offense which has struggled all season. It will come down to eliminating mistakes on offense and methodically move the ball to the end zone. FaQ Sparty.... I was really considering staying off of this site for a while but when I saw Blake O'Neil stand up in front of the media and answer every question with class and dignity, I realized I didn't want to stay away. Well spoken mate! The end of the game was a fluke and don't let the msu chirpers convince you they deserved the victory. As usual they completely disregard reality by looking only at the yardage on the scoreboard tossing away the great field position our special teams provided us drive after drive. And I'm willing to bet my last dollar that 75% of the msu fans didn't even see the last play in real time. Even the angry midget acknowledged he was halfway up the tunnel before the last snap. We'll bounce back but a bit of time off for now. Dee-Fense.... The chant gave me goosebumps and it was something I had never heard in all my years in The Big House. The game was basically over several minutes before but a vast majority of fans stayed in the stadium just to see the third straight shutout. They tell me it has happened in my lifetime before but I just don't remember it. Possibly because this season it is so unexpected. And that is what is making this year so special. The defense just keeps coming at opponents from all different angles, swarming to the ball at every opportunity. Please, please keep it up!! The offense is doing their share of beating on opponents, ramming it down the throat of the opposing defenses until they just start curling up into a ball. So here comes the never ending chirping of sparty with their chips of disrespect on their shoulders. Gimme a break. Just take of business Blue. Go Blue!!! Good Road Victory.... Well, the hurricane never made its way to Maryland but I liked the earlier game time just the same. The Wolverines got off to a slow start and we all thought the game was going to be another road test. Turns out our defense is pretty good and the harried the turtles all day long. One three and out after another. It was especially encouraging to get the ball back almost immediately after every one of our turnovers. Finally the offense broke a couple of big plays to pull away in the end. Next, a surprising Northwestern team comes to town with its own top ranked defense so if we see another low scoring affair, it will be as a result of the tough defenses, not the inept offenses of last year. It will be interesting to see what the Wildcats' freshman QB will be able to do against our in your face defense. Impressive And Encouraging.... I was expecting a tough game against BYU which was bringing to The Big House an offense which was averaging over 400 yards per game. They had no idea where our defense was coming from and the Wolverines got the shutout I expected the previous week. The offense got into just enough rhythm to score more than enough points with our team of running backs all contributing. Time for a roadtrip as the boys follow our Wolverines to the eastern seaboard for the B1G opener against Maryland. Sounds like there will be plenty of Michigan fans out for the game although the weather could hellacious. The road has not been good for the Wolverines in recent past so this will be a test. Lets hope the defense can continue to shut teams down. End Of Non-Conference Slate.... We close out the non-conference schedule against a tough BYU team and we have to get a lot better, especially on offense. We barely made half the spread against a small and outmanned UNLV team tossing away several opportunities to pull far away. The defense made plays and appears to be growing with each game. But a decent opposing defense will have its way against us if our Wolverines don't start making plays on offense. This week will be a good test and I have a feeling the team will put in the work needed to make those improvements. Hope to see you out at the tailgate on what I am hoping will finally be a dry Saturday. Eventually We Got It Going.... The first quarter raised some concerns as it looked a lot like the opening game, mistakes on offense, an inability to establish a running game and an opponent field long drive that put OSU out in front. But adjustments were made resulting in a grind it out decisive win for our Wolverines. There will be nothing flashy about the Wolverines as they try to wear down the opponents with a punishing attack on both sides of the ball. It all ended in a drizzle with a lopsided statistical margin. The Runnin' Rebels of UNLV come into town next for another noon kickoff. Hopefully we can get some other guys some playing time. Come Out Early.... We'll be set up at the usual time and with the early kickoff food will be heating up from the start. Check out the menu page of for the listing of Righteous Q we'll be serving both before and after the game. The forecast is for a truly fall day so it should very comfortable catching up with everyone. The New Era begins. Tailgate Time.... OK so week one wasn't so good. Same mistakes as last season resulted in a loss we have seen before. But it is time for the first tailgate of the season and I have been smokin' meat all weekend long. Hey, here is a thought....come out early on Saturday and enjoy the first tailgate of the season with your friends you haven't seen for several months. It will be a great day as we right this ship. Go Blue!! One Week.... Away from the opening of the college football season with, appropriately, our Michigan Wolverines. Not a whole lot of information coming out of the "submarine" but that provides me with a sense of comfort that it is all business inside Schembechler Hall. I'm getting a bit antsy a the first game grows closer and I tune up the tailgate trailer for the following week. The first game on the road will tell us plenty about the New Era of Wolverine football. More as the day approaches. Go Blue! Football Season Is Almost Here.... Heading into August which in the last couple of years has held the opener for the Wolverines. The Tailgate Trailer will soon be in the driveway for some pampering and upgrades. The Wolverines open up on the road which gives me a bit more time to get things ready. Come back for more regular updates as the month and season progresses! Go Blue!! Spring Game.... Offense clearly still struggling but there is hope that the defense has continued to improve and could carry the team thru the early part of the season. Won't truly get a good idea of our strengths and weaknesses until the new players join the squad in the fall, including an experienced QB. But it was great to get out in a decent spring day to watch some football. Check out the pics on the photo page.
